Radon system maintenance and retesting

A radon system should be observed and maintained according to its documentation, and the building should be retested over time. The system indicator is useful for checking operation but cannot replace a radon measurement.

01

Routine owner checks

Know the system’s normal indicator reading, listen for a new fan sound, look for visible pipe or membrane damage, keep discharge clear, retain labels, and follow manufacturer and installer documentation. Do not service energized or inaccessible components yourself.

02

Reasons to retest

EPA suggests future retesting even below 4 pCi/L and specifically notes changed use of a lower level. Also consider testing after mitigation, repair, major renovation, foundation or HVAC changes, or before a real-estate transaction.

03

When to request help

Contact an Iowa-credentialed mitigation specialist for system changes or suspected failure, and an appropriately certified measurement professional when a documented measurement is needed.
